EDUCATION

​Dr. Shemeena K earned her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Government T. D. Medical College, Alappuzha, from July 2008 to October 2014. She then completed her Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Psychiatry at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bangalore from July 2017 to June 2020. Her MD dissertation focused on the "Long-Term Diagnostic Stability of Alcohol Induced Psychotic Disorder (AIPD): A Register-Based Study," conducted under the guidance of Dr. Prabhat K. Chand and Dr. Pratima Murthy.

EXPERIENCE


Dr. Shemeena now working at st Joseph's hospital, Manjummel, ernakulam
previously worked at kmct medical college, calicut- 2 years. In this role, she manages patients with psychiatric illnesses, particularly those with co-morbidities, while also training undergraduate and postgraduate students in both clinical and academic settings.

Prior to her current position, Dr. Shemeena worked as a Senior Resident in the Department of Psychiatry at KMCT Medical College from June 2021 to January 2023. During this time, she gained extensive experience in diagnosing and managing a wide range of psychiatric disorders across various age groups, from children to geriatric patients. She handled psychiatric emergencies and perinatal disorders, substance use disorders, and personality disorders, and was involved in consultation-liaison psychiatry with other clinical departments. Additionally, she contributed to the academic training of undergraduate and postgraduate students in psychiatry.

Dr. Shemeena also held the position of Non-PG Junior Resident (Post-MD) at NIMHANS from July 2020 to August 2020, where she managed psychiatric emergencies and provided holistic care, integrating pharmacological, psychological, and rehabilitation approaches. Her earlier role as a Junior Resident at NIMHANS from July 2017 to June 2020 involved attending mental health camps, training nursing staff, and conducting home visits for patient education in rural areas. Dr. Shemeena's experience includes working in consultation-liaison psychiatry at several general hospitals, psychotherapies under supervision, and specialty clinics focusing on various psychiatric conditions.

Dr. Shemeena also served as a Guest Lecturer in the Department of Pathology at Government Medical College, Manjeri, Kerala, from June 2014 to May 2015, where she conducted case discussions, topic presentations, and journal clubs.

ACHIEVEMENTS


Throughout her career, Dr. Shemeena has demonstrated a commitment to excellence in psychiatric medicine. She possesses strong communication skills and a comprehensive understanding of best practices in the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric illnesses. Dr. Shemeena is fluent in multiple languages, including English, Malayalam, Hindi, Kannada, and Tamil, which enhances her ability to connect with a diverse patient population.

CONTRIBUTIONS


Dr. Shemeena is dedicated to furthering her knowledge and skills in the field of psychiatry. She has participated in various workshops, conferences, and continuing medical education (CME) events, including the "Statistical Methods for Psychiatric Research Using R Software" at NIMHANS, workshops on the Mental Health Care Act, and the International Marce Society Biennial Scientific Meeting in 2018. She has also engaged in CMEs addressing neuropsychiatric aspects of headache, bipolar disorders, and dilemmas in clinical psychiatry, showcasing her commitment to staying updated on the latest advancements in her field.

Dr. Shemeena's areas of interest include conducting research and developing an academic and clinical career focused on bipolar affective disorders, schizophrenia, addiction psychiatry, child psychiatry, and neuropsychiatry. Above all, she aspires to be a successful clinician with a holistic approach to patient care.
